Unleash the Power of Matcha Green Tea Smoothie: The Green Elixir of Vitality
Originating from Japan, matcha is a finely ground, powdered green tea that has been cherished for centuries for its exceptional taste and exceptional health benefits. Unlike traditional steeped green tea, matcha is made from shade-grown tea leaves, which are carefully ground into a silky powder, capturing the essence of the entire leaf. This process ensures that every sip of matcha is brimming with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, making it a potent elixir for promoting overall well-being.
Combined with the creaminess of your favorite plant-based milk and the natural sweetness of ripe fruits, our Matcha Green Tea Smoothie not only offers a refreshing and satisfying taste but also provides a sustained release of energy throughout the day.
Our Matcha Green Tea Smoothie Includes Protein
This is what sets our recipe apart from the rest of the matcha green tea smoothie recipes you might find out there – we add more protein than the rest while still keeping it smooth and creamy. This makes it perfect for a morning snack, post workout shake, or just something that hits the spot when you are warm and craving something to cool you off that is good for you.
We aren’t going to try and cram too many ingredients, including too much protein into this drink. The reason is consistency – we want the drink to be as smooth and refreshing as possible.
Amazing Matcha Green Tea Smoothie Health Benefits
A Matcha Green Tea Smoothie brings together the goodness of matcha green tea and nutritious ingredients, offering a wide range of health benefits. Here are some of the key advantages of incorporating this vibrant green elixir into your diet.
- Rich in Antioxidants: Matcha is loaded with potent antioxidants, especially catechins, including EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate). These antioxidants help neutralize free radicals in the body, protecting cells from damage and reducing oxidative stress, which may aid in preventing chronic diseases.
- Enhances Calmness and Focus: Matcha contains L-Theanine, an amino acid that promotes relaxation and a sense of calmness. When combined with the natural caffeine in matcha, it provides a balanced boost of energy without the jitters, enhancing mental clarity and focus.
- Boosts Metabolism: The combination of catechins and caffeine in matcha has been linked to a potential increase in metabolic rate. This can aid in burning calories more efficiently, making it a helpful addition to weight management efforts.
- Supports Heart Health: Regular consumption of matcha green tea has been associated with improved cardiovascular health. It may help reduce LDL cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure, thus reducing the risk of heart disease.
- Detoxifies the Body: The chlorophyll content in matcha helps to naturally detoxify the body by removing heavy metals and toxins, promoting a healthier internal environment.
- Strengthens the Immune System: The array of vitamins and minerals in matcha, including vitamins A, C, and E, as well as potassium and iron, supports a robust immune system, helping the body defend against infections and illnesses.
- Aids in Digestion: Matcha contains dietary fiber, which can aid digestion and promote a healthy gut environment. The smoothie’s additional ingredients, such as fruits and vegetables, further contribute to better digestive health.
- Hydration and Skin Benefits: The liquid base of the smoothie, usually plant-based milk or water, helps keep you hydrated. Hydration is essential for overall health and contributes to maintaining healthy skin, keeping it radiant and glowing.
- Natural Source of Energy: The combination of L-Theanine and caffeine in matcha provides a steady and sustained release of energy, keeping you alert and energetic without the abrupt crashes associated with coffee.
- Nutrient-Rich: Besides matcha, the smoothie often includes fruits, leafy greens, and other nutritious ingredients, providing an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber that contribute to overall well-being.
Remember, while a matcha green tea smoothie offers many health benefits, it’s essential to maintain a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle for optimal results. Enjoy this delicious and nourishing beverage as a delightful addition to your daily routine!
Which Matcha Should You Buy?
You will find there are 3 types of matcha, or grades, that the powder is sold in. Even though it is slightly more expensive, go with the “ceremonial grade” matcha. It is the highest grade (obviously) and best quality. It is the tea used in the tea ceremonies. The color and flavor is superior to the other types of matcha you will find.
In order of preference:
- Ceremonial Grade Matcha: Highest grade and best for the recipe. It is a vibrant, bright green and has the smoothest flavor.
- Latte Grade Matcha: Still green but darker. May have a slightly bitter flavor.
- Cooking Grade Matcha: Darker green, probably even a brown color. Is a dull color and is much more bitter than the others.
In the end, if you do go with another matcha you will probably have to add additional sweeteners, such as honey or maple syrup. We prefer to not add sugars whenever possible and letting the natural sugars of the fruits balance the drink.
Can You Refrigerate or Freeze It?
Yes – you can freeze or refrigerate the finished matcha green tea smoothie. The consistency will change over time so you may have to remix. If you are going to refrigerate it, we generally recommend keeping it no more than a day. Also, as tea sits it tends to get more bitter. So, you may also have to add sweetener to the smoothie to make it more palatable.
Matcha Green Tea Smoothie Recipe
Smoothie Ingredient List
- 3/4 cups frozen (or fresh) pineapple chunks
- 1/2 ripe banana
- 3/4 tablespoon matcha green tea powder
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup plain or vanilla Greek Yogurt (low or no sugar added, 2% milk fat)
- 1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons milk
- 1/4 cup ice
- 2 tablespoons vanilla protein powder
Creating the Matcha Smoothie
Order is important. You want the pineapple and bananas closest to the blades. Chop the bananas into chunks.
The other ingredients can go in the blender in nearly any order after that.
Once you have all the ingredients added, pulse blend until smooth and frothy. You will have to scrape the sides of the blender several times.
If the mixture is too thin, you can add more yogurt or even protein powder. If the mixture is too thick, you can thin it with additional ice.
Variations To Try
You can add additional fruit, such as blueberries if you want. Be careful not to add too many, as this will affect the color of the drink and make it more of a darker brown hue. We prefer to garnish with blueberries and eat them as a side snack with the shake. The smoothie will probably be thick enough to support a couple of them as a garnish.
You can substitute the milk with any milk you want – oat, coconut, soy, etc. Or you can also use water and add a tablespoon or coconut milk powder.
You can also create a variation that is vegan or plant based by putting vegan yogurt in place of the Greek yogurt and adding your preferred vegan milk.
This Matcha Green Tea Smoothie took less than 5 minutes to make. This makes it ideal for a quick snack, cooling off on a hot summer’s day or as a refreshing end to a workout blend you just created.
